Defending two-time MotoGP World Champion Francesco 'Pecco' Bagnaia delivered a clinical victory in Saturday's 13-lap Indonesian Grand Prix Sprint at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, cutting Jorge Martín's championship lead in half from 24 points to 12. Starting from fourth on the grid in searing tropical track temperatures exceeding 55 degrees Celsius, the Ducati Lenovo Team rider seized control of the race on the opening lap after pole-sitter Martín lost the front end of his Prima Pramac Ducati at Turn 16.
Martín had dominated morning qualifying with a blistering lap record of 1:29.088 to secure pole position by more than half a second, and launched cleanly off the line into Turn 1. However, just seconds later at the tight right-hand Turn 16 hairpin, the Spaniard tucked the front wheel while leaning over the curbing. Although Martín quickly remounted his machine and charged through the field at record pace, he crossed the line in 10th place—one spot shy of the Sprint points-scoring positions.
Ducati Podium Lockout as Márquez Charges from 12th
Inheriting the lead at the end of Lap 1, Bagnaia controlled the rhythm from the front while managing severe soft-compound rear tire degradation around the flowing 4.3-kilometer coastal circuit. Factory Ducati teammate Enea Bastianini mounted a late-race charge in the closing three laps, slicing into Bagnaia's advantage and finishing just 0.107 seconds behind at the checkered flag to secure a Ducati Lenovo 1-2 finish.
Eight-time world champion Marc Márquez produced one of the standout rides of the afternoon for Gresini Racing. After suffering two crashes in Q2 that left him 12th on the starting grid, Márquez rocketed to fifth place on the opening lap alone and dueled past Marco Bezzecchi to claim the final podium spot in third. Bezzecchi finished fourth for VR46 Racing after surviving a mid-race braking error while challenging Bagnaia for the lead.
“Winning the Sprint here in Mandalika was crucial for the championship after our difficult race in Misano. Once I saw Jorge crash, I focused on managing tire temperatures and bringing home maximum points.”
Title Battle Intensifies Ahead of Sunday's Main Race
Bagnaia's fifth Sprint triumph of the season—and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in August—completely resets the momentum of the 20-round championship battle as MotoGP kicks off its grueling flyaway tour across Asia and Australia. Having lost 24 points after crashing out of third place at Misano a week earlier, the Italian rider now trails Martín by just 12 points (341 to 329), with Bastianini third on 291 and Márquez fourth on 288.
Attention now shifts to Sunday's full-distance 27-lap Indonesian Grand Prix, where Martín will once again launch from pole position determined to rebound, while Bagnaia, Bastianini, and Márquez aim to capitalize on their strong race pace in front of more than 100,000 enthusiastic Indonesian fans.
