Shenzhen-based automaker BYD has surged past the historic milestone of 400,000 monthly New Energy Vehicle (NEV) deliveries during September's peak automotive buying season, cementing its position as the world's largest manufacturer of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid passenger cars. Industry tracking data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) and factory dispatch logs confirm that weekly showroom registrations climbed steadily throughout the month, putting BYD comfortably ahead of its 3.6 million annual unit target.

The primary catalyst behind the September surge is rapid consumer uptake of BYD's fifth-generation Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i 5.0) plug-in hybrid technology. Introduced earlier this year on high-volume models such as the Qin L DM-i, Seal 06 DM-i, and Song L DM-i, the powertrain achieves an industry-leading engine thermal efficiency of 46.06 percent, fuel consumption as low as 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers on a depleted battery, and a combined driving range exceeding 2,100 kilometers on a single tank and full charge.

Plug-In Hybrids Reshape China's Passenger Car Market

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) now account for more than half of BYD's total passenger vehicle sales, outpacing pure battery-electric growth as mainstream buyers seek long-distance flexibility without range anxiety. Priced starting below 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,200) in the domestic market, BYD's Ocean and Dynasty series models have captured significant market share from legacy joint-venture internal combustion brands.

Domestic demand received an additional boost from Beijing's expanded national trade-in subsidy program, which doubled cash incentives to 20,000 yuan for motorists scrapping older gasoline cars in favor of qualifying New Energy Vehicles. Across China as a whole, NEV retail penetration remained above 50 percent of all new passenger car sales for a second consecutive month during the traditional 'Golden September' sales period.

“Our fifth-generation DM-i hybrid architecture and blade battery platform are accelerating the global transition away from conventional internal combustion vehicles at unprecedented scale.”

Global Manufacturing Footprint and Export Expansion

Beyond its domestic stronghold, BYD continued to scale international shipments across Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe, with monthly overseas deliveries exceeding 30,000 units. Roll-on/roll-off car carrier vessels chartered directly by BYD have streamlined maritime logistics to ports in Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, and the European Union.

To mitigate tariff pressures and localize supply chains, BYD is rapidly ramping up production at its newly opened Southeast Asian assembly hub in Rayong, Thailand, alongside ongoing factory construction in Camaçari, Brazil; Szeged, Hungary; and Manisa, Turkey. Analysts project that the company's fourth-quarter output could push full-year deliveries toward 4 million vehicles globally.
