Acclaimed video game auteur Hideo Kojima returned to the main stage of the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) at Makuhari Messe in Chiba on Sunday for a packed 80-minute 'Special Stage' presentation dedicated to 'Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.' Marking Kojima Productions' first major public stage appearance at Japan's premier gaming convention in five years, the showcase offered thousands of attendees and global livestream viewers an extensive look at the upcoming PlayStation 5 sequel's characters, Decima Engine visual fidelity, and interactive features.
Joined on stage by Japanese voice cast members Kenjiro Tsuda (Sam Porter Bridges), Nana Mizuki (Fragile), Tomokazu Sugita (Dollman), Mitsuru Miyamoto (Tarman), Shion Wakayama (Tomorrow), and忽那汐里 (Shioli Kutsuna), alongside filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn and musician Daichi Miura, Kojima debuted three brand-new cinematic sequences captured directly on PlayStation 5 hardware.
New Characters, George Miller's Tarman, and Interactive Photo Studio
The newly unveiled scenes introduced key crew members aboard the mobile base DHV Magellan. One sequence spotlighted Tarman, a mysterious captain and physician modeled after legendary 'Mad Max' director George Miller and voiced in English by Marty Rhone, as he examines Sam and explains the supernatural tar currents connecting their world. Another dramatic scene introduced Rainy, played in both performance capture and Japanese voice acting by Shioli Kutsuna, alongside Tomorrow, portrayed by Hollywood actress Elle Fanning.
One of the showcase's biggest surprises was the live demonstration of an interactive in-game 'Photo Shoot Event' aboard the Magellan's private quarters. Holding a virtual instant camera, players can frame Fragile, Tomorrow, Rainy, and Dollman as the characters dynamically react to the lens, strike choreographed poses, change facial expressions, and break into spontaneous dance routines under customizable studio lighting before printing virtual Polaroid keepsakes.

Daichi Miura Musical Collaboration and 2025 Release Roadmap
The presentation also highlighted the sequel's musical direction, as acclaimed Japanese singer-songwriter and choreographer Daichi Miura—who previously appeared as a holographic prepper in the original 2019 title—announced an official original song collaboration with Kojima Productions and performed live on the TGS stage alongside Dollman's in-game dance animations.
While confirming that 'Death Stranding 2: On the Beach' remains firmly on track for its scheduled 2025 launch on PlayStation 5, Kojima explained that the studio has already locked its internal release date and is currently in the intensive tuning, voice recording, and gameplay balancing phase. The showcase concluded with the unveiling of official bomber jackets and merchandise designed in partnership with fashion brand Acronym.
