French Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu officially confirmed on Tuesday that the first batch of upgraded Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets will be delivered to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2025. Speaking before parliamentary defense committees in Paris, Lecornu emphasized that Paris is actively refitting the supersonic multi-role jets with specialized equipment tailored specifically to Kyiv's tactical operational needs on the frontline.
The aircraft, originally designed primarily as air-superiority interceptors, are undergoing comprehensive modifications at the Cazaux Airbase in southwestern France. French aeronautical engineers are integrating precision air-to-ground weaponry, transforming the fighters into potent strike platforms capable of deploying SCALP-EG cruise missiles and AASM Hammer precision-guided glide bombs.

In addition to enhanced offensive capabilities, the French defense ministry is installing sophisticated electronic warfare (EW) and countermeasure systems. Meanwhile, the training of Ukrainian flight crews and ground maintenance personnel is progressing at an accelerated pace across several French air force installations. Since the spring of 2024, Ukrainian aviators have been undergoing instruction on Alpha Jet advanced trainers before transitioning to the Mirage cockpits under the supervision of seasoned French instructors.
