The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) took decisive nationwide action to curb dangerous airport near-misses today, announcing the deployment of its advanced Surface Situation Awareness (SSA) system to 43 high-density commercial airfields across the United States.

The technology leverages multi-static radar, ADS-B satellite telemetry, and ground multilateration to project instantaneous aircraft position overlays directly onto air traffic controllers' primary radar displays, providing immediate auditory and visual warnings if an arriving or departing plane is on a collision course or lining up on a closed runway or taxiway.

Decisive Federal Response to Close Calls

The expansion follows urgent safety recommendations issued by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and findings from the FAA's Independent Aviation Safety Review Team, which analyzed alarming near-collisions at major hubs including Austin, Boston, San Francisco, and New York-JFK.

Unlike legacy ground radar systems that cost tens of millions of dollars and require years of civil engineering construction, the modern Surface Aware package installs in weeks using commercial off-the-shelf components and secure cloud-native architecture.

Nationwide Implementation Ahead of Holiday Travel Rush

Airports receiving the upgraded surface surveillance include key connecting gateways such as Nashville, Austin-Bergstrom, Indianapolis, Dallas Love Field, and San Jose.

FAA leadership confirmed that all 43 designated facilities will achieve operational certification ahead of the peak Thanksgiving holiday travel period in late November.
