The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) today initiated a synchronized public health campaign across 53 member states, urging national health ministries to aggressively roll out autumn immunization programs against influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Addressing a joint briefing in Copenhagen and Stockholm, health officials warned that seasonal respiratory pathogens are poised to circulate concurrently this winter, threatening severe pressure on hospital emergency departments and intensive care units if coverage remains suboptimal.

Dual Administration and Updated Antigen Profiles

The guidance strongly recommends the co-administration of updated seasonal influenza vaccines alongside JN.1-adapted COVID-19 mRNA boosters during a single clinical appointment, confirming that simultaneous vaccination remains safe, effective, and convenient.

The campaign places special emphasis on protecting vulnerable demographics: individuals aged 60 and older, immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, and frontline clinical staff who face high occupational exposure.

“Vaccination remains our most formidable shield against severe respiratory illness. We cannot afford complacency as winter approaches.”

Expanding Pediatric and Senior RSV Protections

For the first time in an autumn campaign, health agencies highlighted expanded access to newly approved maternal and infant RSV monoclonal antibodies, as well as protein-based vaccines for seniors in long-term care homes.

European governments have already begun mobilizing community pharmacies and general practitioner clinics to ensure equitable vaccine access across rural and urban communities.
