The European Commission executed another landmark sovereign-style debt operation today, raising €11 billion in a dual-tranche syndicated transaction under its unified EU-Bonds framework. The transaction consisted of a new €6 billion five-year bond maturing in October 2031 and a €5 billion tap of its 30-year bond maturing in October 2056.

Global institutional investors submitted over €105 billion in orders, underscoring resilient international confidence in the European Union's creditworthiness and the depth of its shared benchmark yield curve.

Unlocking Capital for NextGenerationEU and RePowerEU

Net proceeds will flow directly into member state national recovery plans under NextGenerationEU and the REPowerEU energy independence strategy. Funds will support high-speed rail integration, grid modernization, and semiconductor manufacturing clusters.

The transaction marks the European Commission's ninth syndicated issue of the year, bringing total EU-Bond debt raised in 2026 to €102 billion toward an annual funding target of €140 billion.

“The overwhelming investor reception for today's transaction confirms that EU-Bonds have firmly established themselves as liquid, premier safe-haven assets in global capital markets.”

Strategic Deepening of European Capital Markets

Lead managers on the transaction reported heavy participation from sovereign wealth funds, central banks, and long-term pension managers across Europe, North America, and East Asia.

The five-year tranche priced at a yield of 2.82%, while the 30-year paper was placed at 3.54%, reflecting disciplined debt management as the European Central Bank approaches a monetary easing cycle.
