Belgian cycling star Lotte Kopecky successfully defended her Rainbow Jersey in treacherous, rain-soaked conditions at the UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, unleashing a devastating final sprint at Sechseläutenplatz to claim back-to-back elite women's road race titles. After 154.1 punishing kilometers from Uster onto the steep city circuits around Lake Zurich, the 28-year-old outkicked American Chloé Dygert, who took silver, and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini, who captured bronze.
The championship race began in a somber atmosphere following the tragic death of 18-year-old Swiss rider Muriel Furrer, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash during the junior women's race earlier in the week. The peloton observed a poignant moment of silence at the starting line, and relentless cold rain turned the four laps of the Zurich circuit—featuring the sharp gradients of Zürichbergstrasse and Witikonerstrasse—into a test of pure survival and tactical composure.
Tactical Mastery Against the Dutch Armada on Zurich's Climbs
The powerhouse Dutch national team, led by Demi Vollering,Marianne Vos, and Riejanne Markus, repeatedly tried to isolate Kopecky by launching long-range attacks on the soaked climbs. When Markus and België's Justine Ghekiere forged clear ahead of the penultimate lap, Vollering surged on the final ascent of Witikon, briefly dropping Kopecky as the gradients bit into tired legs.
