Reigning champion 128 Grazer has once again captured the internet's heart and stomach, claiming victory in Fat Bear Week 2024 at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. The fearsome female brown bear dominated the championship showdown on Tuesday, amassing an overwhelming 71,248 votes to easily defeat male heavyweight challenger 32 Chunk, who garnered 30,468 votes.
The annual online tournament, organized by explore.org in partnership with the National Park Service, celebrates the remarkable physiological transformation of brown bears as they feed voraciously on sockeye salmon to accumulate critical fat reserves before entering winter hibernation. Grazer entered the competition sporting a massive silhouette and glistening coat after months of relentless fishing.
Decisive Landslide Victory on the Brooks River
Known for her formidable presence along the Brooks River, Grazer first arrived in Katmai as a young cub in 2005. Over nearly two decades, she has earned a fierce reputation as one of the park's most protective mothers, famously confronting even the largest adult males to defend her offspring and claiming prime fishing spots at Brooks Falls.
Her opponent in the final, 32 Chunk, was no lightweight. Boasting an estimated weight exceeding 1,200 pounds and displaying an immense rump of stored energy, Chunk was considered a formidable contender. However, Grazer's charismatic backstory, maternal courage, and undeniable bulk captured voters worldwide in a lopsided contest.
“Grazer's dominance on the Brooks River and fierce maternal protection make her an undeniable legend among Katmai's thriving brown bear population.” — Katmai National Park and Preserve Rangers
Celebrating Ecological Resilience and Katmai's Sockeye Salmon
Park rangers emphasized that while the tournament is lighthearted and entertaining, it underscores serious conservation lessons regarding pristine ecosystems. Katmai is home to one of the densest protected brown bear populations on Earth, supported by the world's greatest remaining wild sockeye salmon run in Bristol Bay.
Grazer will soon retreat into her winter den with the biological security of hundreds of pounds of insulating fat, ready to endure months of subzero Arctic temperatures. Her back-to-back crowns cement her legacy among Katmai's most iconic and beloved wilderness monarchs.
