Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum kicked off preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the Mexico City-Pachuca passenger train during a ceremony in Tizayuca, Hidalgo, marking one of the flagship infrastructure projects of her administration.
The 96-kilometer electrified passenger railway will link the historic Buenavista terminal in northern Mexico City with the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) before continuing north to the state capital of Pachuca.
Connecting Central Mexico with High-Speed Clean Rail Infrastructure
Designed to serve more than 100,000 daily passengers, the double-track electric train system will run at speeds up to 130 km/h, dramatically slashing travel times along one of the nation's most congested commuter corridors from over two hours down to approximately one hour and twenty minutes.
The project is being constructed jointly by military engineers from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) alongside the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), with primary civil works scheduled to begin in early 2025.
“Restoring passenger rail across Mexico is a strategic priority that brings sustainable mobility, cuts regional travel times, and honors the economic dignity of working communities.” — Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, President of Mexico
Major Travel Time Cuts and Economic Transformation for Hidalgo
Speaking before federal officials and regional governors, President Sheinbaum reiterated her commitment to revive more than 3,000 kilometers of passenger rail lines across the country during her six-year term, combining environmental sustainability with accessible transit.
State authorities project that the transit corridor will generate over 40,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction, while integrating marginalized suburban municipalities into the broader metropolitan economy.
